Mobilizing SDG 14: CAS Drives Marine Ecosystem Restoration for Sustainable Resource Use

THA SALA, NAKHON SI THAMMARAT, 18–19 April 2025 — The Center for Academic Services (CAS), Walailak University, in collaboration with the Ban Nai Thung Local Fishery Association, a non-governmental organization supporting the fishermen’s society in Tha Sala District, and its partners, organized the project “Artificial Fish Habitat Construction” at the Ban Nai Thung Blue Swimming Crab Learning Center.

This significant initiative was launched to raise public awareness of the importance of conserving marine food resources and preserving refuge areas for young aquatic animals. It also aimed to enhance aquatic biodiversity, promote community-based tourism, and increase local fishermen’s income.

The event was officially opened by Mr. Bancha Sukkaew, Director of the Department of Fisheries, with a welcoming address delivered by Asst. Prof. Dr. Amonsak Sawusdee, Director of the Center for Academic Services. The event drew participation from over 300 individuals, including representatives from government and private sectors, researchers, lecturers, students, and members of the local community.

In addition to constructing artificial fish habitats, a range of activities promoting the sustainable use of aquatic resources and environmental protection were organized, including:

1.The release of young blue swimming crabs into the sea.

     2. Seminar sessions on key topics such as “Roles and Partnerships in Mobilizing Thai Bay towards Sustainability” and “Current Situations in Climate Change and Coastal Marine Ecosystems: Working, Lessons Learned, and the Progress in Coastal Management through the Prism of Local People.”

3.Interactive learning areas on longtail boat culture, safe marine food practices, marine waste management, and the Blue Swimming Crab Bank initiative.

A highlight of the event was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Ban Nai Thung, Ban Sra Bua, and Ban Na Tap communities. Facilitated by the Center for Academic Services, the MOU formalized their collaborative efforts in managing local marine areas through the Locally Managed Marine Area (LMMA) approach, reinforcing their shared commitment to sustainable natural resource management for the long-term benefit of their communities.

This initiative directly supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 14: Life Below Water, SDG 2: Zero Hunger, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals.
