Walailak University Earns Two Global Good Governance Awards 2025, Reinforcing Leadership in Sustainability and Green Campus

Walailak University (WU) continues to gain global recognition for its commitment to sustainability, having received two prestigious Global Good Governance (3G) Awards for 2025: the 3G Excellence Award for Green Campus and the 3G Championship Award for Sustainable Development.

These accolades, presented by Cambridge IFA, a UK-based financial intelligence organization, reflect the university’s consistent alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through its operations, education, and community outreach.

The 3G Summit and Awards 2025 took place on 13 May 2025 at Balai Khazanah Islam Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, Brunei Darussalam, and was attended by representatives from more than 15 countries. The event brought together leaders from government, academia, and the private sector to honor excellence in governance, sustainability, and social impact. Representing Walailak University at the event were Associate Professor Dr. Warit Jawjit, Vice President, and Assistant Professor Dr. Amonsak Sawusdee, Director of the Center for Academic Services.

Beyond receiving the awards, WU was also spotlighted for its role in advancing global best practices in sustainable development and good governance. The university was invited to share its experiences at the summit, where its strategic approaches and impactful initiatives were highlighted as exemplary. The invitation to join the summit as a distinguished panelist on Strengthening Institutions for Community Well-being and Sustainability underscored the growing international recognition of Walailak University’s progress under the leadership of President Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong.

The 3G Excellence Award for Green Campus 2025 celebrates WU’s commitment to environmental sustainability, demonstrated through initiatives such as solar energy adoption, electric shuttle systems, expansive green spaces, and the reduction of plastic and food waste. The university’s 3,793-acre campus stands as a model of ecological stewardship, with its 534-acre botanical park serving as both a biodiversity hub and a center for public learning.

The 3G Championship Award for Sustainable Development 2025 highlights WU’s contributions beyond campus walls. Through its academic service framework, the university has extended the application of knowledge, research, and innovation to empower communities. Notable projects include Blue Crab Bank conservation efforts, coral reef restoration, the development of a 2.4-million-cubic-meter reservoir that benefits both the campus and surrounding areas, and outreach programs to improve the health and well-being of local communities, disadvantaged groups, and immigrant populations.

WU’s global standing in sustainable development is further affirmed by its performance in the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings 2024, where it was ranked within the 101–200 band out of 2,152 institutions worldwide. The university was also ranked 3rd globally for Stewardship and 4th globally for Outreach in the THE Impact Rankings Report 2024.

In addition, WU has been recognized as the No.1 green university in Southern Thailand for five consecutive years, 6th in Thailand, and joint 81st worldwide according to the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings 2024.
