Walailak University celebrated the Walailak Songkran: Preserving Thai Traditions 2026 festival on April 8, 2026, bringing together more than 500 university executives, staff, students, and members of surrounding communities to honor Thailand’s traditional New Year and strengthen cultural ties between the university and the local community.
The opening ceremony was presided over by Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, President of Walailak University, and was held at the Architecture and Design Building. The celebration provided an opportunity for students and staff to express their respect and gratitude, seek forgiveness, and receive blessings from elderly members of the Walailak University Demonstration Community.
These respected community members are regarded as pioneers who have supported and played an important role in the establishment and development of the university, contributing to its growth and stability to this day.

Assistant Professor Dr. Marisa Poomiphak Na Nongkhai, Director of the Center for Student Promotion and Development, said that preserving national arts and cultural heritage is one of Walailak University’s key missions. Organizing the Songkran celebration on campus, therefore, reflects the university’s commitment to sustaining Thailand’s valuable traditions while also strengthening positive relationships with communities surrounding the university.
In addition to the traditional water-pouring ceremony to seek blessings from elders, a highlight of the event was a lively long-drum dance performed together by university staff and elderly participants. The joyful activity created a vibrant atmosphere filled with laughter, happiness, and shared cultural pride among all attendees.
