Twenty-eight exchange students from Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP)'s Faculty of Chemical Engineering and Technology were formally welcomed to Walailak University (WU) today at an opening ceremony held at the Spark Meeting Room, Academic Building 1, marking the start of a month-long academic exchange hosted by the School of Science.

The students, accompanied by Dr. Khadijah Hanim binti Abdul Rahman and Dr. Noorulnajwa Diyana Bt Yaacob, were welcomed by Associate Professor Dr. Bundit Unyong and Associate Professor Dr. Kotchaphan Kanjana, Associate Deans of the School of Science, along with Assistant Professor Dr. Patnarin Supakorn, Director of the Center for International Affairs.

From 5 to 28 August, the visiting students will attend the Environmental Conservation and Global Warming Course, an English-medium course covering topics such as waste sorting, personal carbon footprint assessment, the role of plants in climate mitigation, and sustainable “green university” practices, alongside hands-on activities including a biochar workshop using mangosteen agricultural waste.

“Offering the course under the MoU between Walailak University and UniMAP creates a joint international learning environment — it bridges academic expertise across the Thailand-Malaysia border,” said Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mullica Jaroensutasinee, Acting Dean of the School of Science.

“This course provides a platform for students from both countries to analyze global warming through a shared, multicultural lens. Solving environmental problems and adapting to global warming isn't something any one country can do alone.” 

The program is also designed to allow students from both universities to improve their English communication skills and deepen cross-cultural understanding.

Looking ahead, Dr. Mullica said the two universities are exploring ways to deepen the partnership further, including joint field workshops on coastal and mangrove ecosystems spanning southern Thailand and northern Malaysia, collaborative research on tropical biodiversity and smart environmental monitoring, and virtual co-teaching.
