Krabi Province, in collaboration with Walailak University, has convened the first meeting of the working committee to prepare an application for Geographical Indication (GI) registration for “Krabi Black Tiger Shrimp”. The meeting focused on reviewing the draft GI application, quality control documentation, and supporting materials required for submission, as part of efforts to position the product as an internationally recognized specialty.
On 9 April 2026, the meeting was held at Ao Luek Meeting Room, 3rd Floor, Krabi Provincial Hall. The session was presided over by Mr. Charoenchai Srisuwan, Krabi Provincial Fisheries Officer, under Krabi Provincial Order No. 1345/2569. Associate Professor Dr. Onanong Cheablam, along with a team from the Center for Academic Services at Walailak University, participated in the meeting, alongside more than 30 representatives from relevant government agencies, including the Office of Provincial Commercial Affairs, Public Health Office, and other local organizations.
The primary objective of the meeting was to jointly review the draft GI application, draft product inspection and control documentation, and related public announcement drafts. These documents are being refined to ensure full compliance with the criteria set by the Department of Intellectual Property. The GI registration is expected to protect the unique identity of Krabi’s local product and enhance consumer confidence in both domestic and international markets.
The committee reached an agreement in principle and will compile feedback to further refine the draft documents to completion. A follow-up meeting has been scheduled for 6 May 2026 to review progress.
